Downers Grove gets its name from Pierce Downer, who settled the area in 1832. Between the 1960's to 1980's, a boom period led to the population of the town doubling in size. More recently, abundant trees, parks and greenery have earned Downers Grove the nickname, “Village of Trees,” and many homes in the area enjoy scenic wooded settings. Downtown Downers Grove also boasts one of the country’s best preserved classic cinemas, the Tivoli Theatre, which was built in 1928, and pays homage to Hollywood’s Golden Age. Downers Grove also boasts a bustling business district, including the headquarters for DeVry University, FTD, Dover and Heartland Food Corporation.
